You are invited to contribute at the next Artist Voices meeting: Artist Spaces!

After receiving direct feedback from over 80 artists who participated in the Voice is Yours: Artist Summit from July 6, 2019, a collective group of arts organizations have listened to artists’ needs and have curated three programs through the beginning of 2020! Voice is Yours: Artist Spaces takes place on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the lower level auditorium at KC Health Department.

Voice is Yours: Artist Spaces is the second in a series of gatherings offered by a collaborative team made up of representatives from artist organizations across the KC metro. The Artist Spaces topic was identified as a top priority by artists at our first summit held in July of this year. The goal for the series is to connect, inform and empower artists, so they will be better equipped to confront the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing built and cultural landscape.

To catch up on the progress made from the last event, and you can read the electronic zine version of the event here. You can read the full summary of the event here.

Appetizers and drinks will be provided at 5:30 PM with presentations beginning at 6:00 PM. This discussion is hosted by the KC Health Department at 2400 Troost Avenue in Kansas City, MO.

Artists are encouraged to park in the south public parking lot and enter in the main entrance. You can access elevators to the left of the opening lobby and ride to the Lower Level to access the auditorium. There will be signage and guides present.

Please email communications@charlottestreet.org if you have any questions regarding accessibility (transportation, child care, ADA needs, etc.).

You must RSVP for this event. You can RSVP through the Facebook event linked here.

Artists are encouraged to attend a presentation of 9 pecha-kucha style slide show presentations from other artists who cover the topics of:
1. Artist Venues
2. Affordable housing/studio space
3. Artist Ownership and investment

Confirmed presenting artists will be announced soon.

Attendees will be able to break out into discussion groups after presentation themes to share ideas and connect with other peers for more resources. After all presentations are made, an “Idea Marketplace” will round out the program, allowing artists to match up based on needs/interests and brainstorm what their next action steps should be.

The goal of the “The Voice Is Yours” is to unify, educate, and activate the artist community around their self-identified top priorities.

Future meetings and topics include:
“The Voice is Yours: Representation” (Date: January TBD)
“The Voice Is Yours: Leadership” (Date: Spring TBD)

Increased knowledge and the ability to access local and national art business resources;
Strategic planning for pursuing, marketing and sustaining their art; and a
Long-term network of cross-discipline, diverse artists to provide peer learning and support into the future.

KCAI Crossroads Gallery

In 2015, Margaret Silva; alumna, former board member, and longtime supporter of the Kansas City Art Institute, generously gifted 1819 Grand Boulevard, the building that housed Grand Arts for 20 years, to KCAI. The facilities include two galleries, a large cross-disciplinary studio and an artist-in-residence apartment. Renamed KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice, the space provides an exciting opportunity for the college to be a part of the popular Crossroads Arts District.

We envision programs that expand the academic curriculum by offering students a cooperative and cross-disciplinary learning environment. The site will also be the location for a new KCAI artist-in-residence program. Director Michael Schonhoff will guide the site’s programs, while a faculty group, the Center for Contemporary Practice Committee, will build the curricula for this location.

Kansas City Artists Coalition

The Kansas City Artists Coalition was created to change the lives of artists living in Kansas City, Missouri.

On March 5, 1975 a large group of artists gathered in the studio of local artists Philomene Bennett and Lou Marak to address “How the Artist Can Benefit from Centralization.” Overwhelmingly the group felt a self-initiated organization was the only alternative to isolation, elitism, apathy, and ignorance. The ultimate result of that meeting was the incorporation of the Kansas City Artist Coalition in August 1976.

The Kansas City Artists Coalition (KCAC or Artists Coalition) is an artist-centered, artist-run alternative space that presents a variety of exhibitions of contemporary artists’ work in its Mallin Gallery, Jacqueline B. Charno Gallery, the Underground Gallery and the Snap Space Gallery.

KCMO Office of Culture and Creative Services

The Office of Culture and Creative Services (OCCS) was established in 2015 to lead cultural development efforts for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. The mission of the Office is to serve Kansas City residents by bolstering and catalyzing arts, culture and creativity and by leveraging the arts as a strategy for economic development, neighborhood revitalization, and cultural vitality for its citizens.

The creation of the office is a direct outcome of Mayor Sly James’ Task Force on the Arts and the convening of arts, civic and business leadership, involved in visioning processes that resulted in a community cultural plan, KCMO Arts Convergence Plan, adopted by the Mayor and City Council in late 2013.

The City will be strategic in preparing for continued cultural growth. Partnerships between the Office of Culture and Creative Services and for-profit and non-profit organizations are vital to the growth and development of the city’s arts sector. Investing time and resources in the arts will:

– Increase jobs in the creative sector

– Strengthen Kansas City’s communities and cultural identity

– Increase access to education and life-long learning in the arts, and

– Promote Kansas City as the heart of America’s Creative Crossroads and a destination for national and international visitors.
